Since establishing W27 Diagnostics and Imaging, Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist Dr Subhasis Basu has continued to advance both his own understanding in the field and that of others. He does this through:
Teaching and lecturing:
Dr Basu is a visiting Professor at Manchester Metropolitan University. He is involved in the planning as well as the delivery of the ‘Imaging’ module for a post-graduate MSc programme where he teaches a mixture of multidisciplinary students from backgrounds including Orthopaedics, Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine.
Reviewer and publisher in peer-reviewed scientific journals:
Dr Basu actively reviews studies and research prior to publication in peer-reviewed medical journals e.g. Clinical Radiology. He also participates in research and has recently published the following papers and educational exhibits:
- (i) Luokkala T, Temperley D, Basu S, Karjalainen T, Watts A. Analysis of MRI-confirmed soft tissue injury pattern in simple elbow dislocations. Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery 2019; 28(2): 341-348.
- The elbow is the second most commonly dislocated joint. Stability depends on the degree of soft tissue injury, with 2 proposed patterns, one starting laterally and the other medially.
- The purpose of this study was to describe the injured structures observed in magnetic resonance images (MRIs) in a prospective cohort of simple elbow dislocations. Our study concluded that after simple elbow dislocations, complete anterior capsule tears were most common, followed by medial collateral ligament complex (MCL) and lateral collateral ligament complex (LCL) tears.
- (ii) Hussain S, Makki D, Syed S, Basu S, Walton M. How close is the axillary nerve to the inferior glenoid? An MRI study of normal and arthritic shoulders. 19th EFORT Congress. Educational Exhibit (Oral Presentation); 2018.
- Injury to the axillary nerve is not uncommon during shoulder replacement surgery, due to its close proximity with the glenoid. Injuries range from neuropraxia to complete transection.
- The purpose of this study was to determinate the approximate distance of the nerve from the glenoid to minimise risk of nerve damage. Our study concluded that the axillary nerve lies within an average of 12 mm from the infraglenoid tubercle and that osteoarthritis of the shoulder and rotator cuff tear arthropathy do not alter the course of the nerve significantly.
- (iii) Booth S, Walker L, Basu S. “MRI Scaphoid in trauma: is it only the scaphoid which should concern us?” European Society of Skeletal Radiology (ESSR) Educational Exhibit (E-Poster); 2019.
- Scaphoid fractures are occult in upto 20% of normal radiographs. Risks of avascular necrosis or subsequent fracture non-union leading to pain and reduced function are high if fractures not identified and managed early. In the UK, national guidelines advocate consideration of MRI as a first-line diagnostic test for suspected fractures.
- The purpose of this study was to determine the spectrum of alternate diagnoses detected on MRI scaphoids performed for trauma. Our study concluded that there was a multitude of injuries other than scaphoid fractures, that were identified on the initial MRI Scaphoid scans. This highlighted the need to be vigilant when assessing patients clinically as well as when reviewing imaging for scaphoid injuries.
